IT’S ME!
The Haçienda
The winning piece for the inaugural Derwent Brass International Composition Award, The Haçienda, is inspired by the iconic Manchester nightclub of the same name – also known as FAC51 - blending elements of euphoric dance music with influences taken from Aaron’s recent brass work and other productions. New Order famously opened the club in collaboration with the record label Factory Records, playing a central role in the city’s cultural scene during the 1980s and 1990s. The piece represents a fusion of these diverse worlds, capturing the energy, passion, and community of the nightclub’s heyday, reimagined through a contemporary lens.

Autobiographical…
Since collaborating with New Order in 2017-2018 as part of their synth orchestra, I’ve been exploring ways to incorporate their iconic sound into my own music, especially in my work composing for dance. My music is deeply personal, often reflecting my own experiences, and The Haçienda is no exception. This piece is shaped by an eclectic range of influences: New Order, my time writing for dance productions, and my role as musical director for Denton Brass Band.
